Why rice matters for climate?

Rice is a staple food for billions, yet its production has significant climate and social impacts, accounting for up to 10% of global agricultural emissions, with a climate footprint on par with the aviation industry.  This is why transforming how we grow rice is essential to fighting climate change and building resilient food systems.

The forum highlights production methods and market approaches that can lower emissions, support farmer livelihoods and meet buyer expectations for traceability and due-diligence alignment.

The event is organised by Preferred by Nature, together with Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP), with Rikolto and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) as partners. It is part of the Low Carbon Rice project funded by the EU SWITCH-Asia Grants Programme and implemented by Preferred by Nature, in collaboration with the coalition of civil society organizations promoting food sovereignty, Koalisi Rakyat untuk Kedaulatan Pangan (KRKP), and the national industry association, Indonesia Rice Millers and Traders Association (PERPADI), key actors in the sustainable transformation of the rice sector globally.
